LOUISE FISHMAN (1939-2021)

ARTIST

by Edward M. Gómez

The artist Louise Fishman, who was known for her studiously composed, powerfully expressive abstract paintings, died in New York City on July 26, 2021, at the age of 82.

Fishman was born and brought up in Philadelphia. Both her mother and her aunt were artists, and, as a girl, Louise sometimes accompanied her mother when she attended drawing classes. In her youth, Fishman played basketball — well, too, she told me in an interview at her Manhattan studio in the year 2000, when I was preparing an article for the New York Times about her latest solo exhibition at the New York gallery Cheim & Read.
