Recently, when we took in the colorful, frenetic paintings the artist Joey Tepedino is now presenting at Hal Bromm Gallery (through December 20, 2023) in New York, we wanted to know: Just who made these bold pictures with their dizzy-dense compositions featuring what appear to be an acid-tripper’s tiki-face souvenirs or maybe a graffiti master’s send-up of old modernism’s, once-romantic vision of “primitive” motifs? Some kid with ADHD who can’t stop opening and closing the refrigerator door?

Tepedino calls his Hal Bromm presentation, which is his first-ever solo exhibition anywhere, “Joey Tepedino: Macrocosmic Minds.” Since, here at brutjournal, we try to navigate skillfully between a macro, big-picture view of what the heck is going on at any given time and more precise, focused examinations of life’s curiosities and vicissitudes, we were intrigued by Tepedino’s offerings and the creative force field from which they appear to have emerged.
