THE BOX, September 1, 2022: IN SPAIN, ART, MUSIC, AND HAIRCUTS

Steven FoRster is a British artist who makes drawings, paintings, mixed-media works, and music, and is also involved in performance; since 1989, he has been based in the Catalonia region of Spain. To examine a summary of the artworks he has created and the multidisciplinary art projects in which he has taken part over many years is to realize that mixing up media and genres is, for FoRster, his standard operating procedure.

His involvement with experimental theater groups and with efforts to make art from found, repurposed objects — in 1995, he helped establish the Drap-Art Assocation in Barcelona, which calls attention through art projects made with cast-off materials to pollution and ecological crises — offer clues to FoRster’s overall ethos and to his creative sensibility. His offbeat humor shows up in his pictures of a character, The Nose, who turns up in numerous works. It is, as its name suggests, simply a large nose that walks around on its own two big, bare feet.

Now, in just a few days, on September 10, FoRster and some other musicians will perform together at La Perrockia in Barcelona, an establishment whose website announces that it’s the place to go for “rock and hair.” That’s because it’s a hair-cutting salon that sometimes serves as a venue for musical performances, too.

So if you find yourself in Barcelona early this month and need a haircut — while feeling the urge to check out that city’s live-music scene — be sure to nose around the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district in the northwestern part of the city, where Carrer del Francolí, the street in which Perrockia is located, can be found.
